Hiking Lion’s Head

Level: Moderate

Total distance: 5.5 km

Cost: FREE

Cape Town is probably one of the most famous cities in South Africa (especially among international tourists), with Lion’s Head being one of the most popular hikes in Cape Town.

Lion’s Head is situated between Table Mountain and Signal Hill and has an elevation of 669m. This hike will provide you with stunning 360° views over the city, Table Bay and the vast Atlantic Ocean. The view is the main reason why it is so popular, especially among Instagrammers.

There are two routes to choose from. The chain ladder route being for the more adventurist hikers (although it is not as bad). If you are not that comfortable with the chain ladders, you can continue straight with the second route, which will take you around the mountain.

It is very important that you take enough water with when you hike up Lion’s Head. I do suggest you start this hike before sunrise or sunset, as this is when you will get the most beautiful sunset/sunrise view. If you do plan on hiking when it is still dark outside, I highly suggest you hike with a headlamp, as the trail can be a bit tricky in the dark.

This hike is especially popular during full moon, although it does get really busy.

You start the hike at the Lion’s Head parking lot (see GPS-coordinate), which you can locate via the Lion’s Head / Signal Hill turn-off from Kloof Nek Road.

This is a free hike which lasts about two to three hours.
